This season of Project Runway has been the most intense yet, as well it should have been since it was a competition between the best of past seasons. The stakes were higher than ever and the challenges pushed the designers’ abilities to their limits. The two-part finale of the All Stars season followed the final three designers through their final challenge and their runway show, and, of course, a winner was selected.
The final three all star designers were Mondo Guerra, Michael Costello, and Austin Scarlett.
The final challenge that was given to Mondo, Michael, and Austin was to design a five-look collection in four days. Keeping up with Project Runway tradition, though, a surprise was added to their challenge on the second day: to design a sixth look for their collection using the scraps from previous challenges. Luckily, they received some help from some of the cut designers.
Here are the collections that the designers completed for the runway show:
Mondo’s collection was entitled “Therapy,” since this competition drove him crazy. The Rorschach inkblot pattern was created by hand- impressive!
Michael’s collection was inspired by the Serengeti and featured many different animal prints. Of course, he also had to include a beautifully draped dress, as well.
Austin’s collection, as he put it, belongs to an eighteenth century vampire who borrow clothes from her “Hasidic dandy-friends.” His usual sophisticated glam was mixed with some rocker-chic elements to create a whole new aesthetic.
So who won Project Runway All Stars? I was rooting for Austin- I’ve loved him ever since he was robbed of the title in the first season. But, alas, the All Stars winner was Mondo. (Michael and Austin didn’t go home empty handed, though. They both got two tickets to Paris as a consolation prize!)
